The bourbon industry just had one of its most consequential weeks in years. A $775 million acquisition, a potential $30 billion merger, a 19% drop in whiskey exports, and a Costco bourbon with a hot dog on the label that flipped for $1,000. This is not a quiet week.

The Week at a Glance

  • Gallo closed its $775M purchase of Four Roses, returning the brand to American family ownership after 80+ years under Kirin Holdings1.
  • Brown-Forman and Pernod Ricard confirmed merger talks that could create a $30 billion, 200-million-case spirits giant2.
  • American whiskey exports fell 19% in 2025, driven by retaliatory EU and Canadian tariffs, per DISCUS3.
  • Angel's Envy released its first age-stated rye: a 10-year cask strength at 111.6 proof4.
  • Costco's "I Got That Dog in Me" bourbon sold out instantly, with secondary prices hitting $1,0005.
  • Shortbarrel Double Oak won Best Overall Bourbon at the 2026 WSWA competition with a 96-point score6.
  • Buffalo Trace continued its Daniel Weller experiments with a spelt wheat bourbon at $549.997.

The Biggest Story: Four Roses Comes Home

E. & J. Gallo Winery finalized its acquisition of Four Roses Bourbon from Japan's Kirin Holdings on April 2. The deal: $725 million upfront plus a $50 million earn-out1.

Four Roses ranks eighth by volume among all bourbon brands worldwide. Master distiller Brent Elliott stays in place. The distillery stays in Lawrenceburg. What changes is distribution muscle: Gallo's network covers every corner of the U.S. wine and spirits market, and they've been building their spirits portfolio aggressively.

For drinkers, the immediate impact is probably nothing. Four Roses Single Barrel and Small Batch Select will still taste the same next month. The longer play is whether Gallo pushes Four Roses into markets and price tiers it couldn't reach under Kirin. Given Gallo's track record of scaling premium brands without diluting quality, the outlook is cautiously positive.

Brown-Forman + Pernod Ricard: A Merger That Would Reshape Everything

Brown-Forman confirmed on March 26 that it's in discussions with Pernod Ricard about a potential "partnership akin to a merger of equals"2. If it goes through, the combined entity would control nearly 200 million 9-liter cases and a market cap around $30 billion, making it the second-largest spirits company behind Diageo8.

Brown-Forman owns Jack Daniel's, Woodford Reserve, and Old Forester. Pernod Ricard owns Jameson, Absolut, and The Glenlivet. A combined portfolio would be staggering.

No agreement has been reached. The Brown family controls Brown-Forman through dual-class shares, and any deal would need their blessing. Bloomberg reported that both families are weighing control and governance structures9. This could take months to resolve, or it could fall apart. But the fact that both companies issued public confirmations means the talks are serious.

New Releases Worth Knowing

Angel's Envy 2026 Cask Strength Dual Release

Angel's Envy dropped two cask strength expressions on March 31: the annual bourbon (117.8 proof, $249.99) and their first-ever age-stated rye (10 years, 111.6 proof, $269.99)4. The rye spent time in Caribbean rum casks for up to four years. Only 10,800 bottles of the rye were produced. Both ship April 17.

The age statement on the rye is the story here. Angel's Envy built its reputation on NAS bourbon. Putting "10 Years" on a cask strength rye signals confidence in their aging program and a response to collectors who want transparency.

Daniel Weller Spelt Wheat Bourbon

Buffalo Trace released the second Daniel Weller experimental bourbon on March 30, this time swapping traditional wheat for spelt at 94 proof and $549.997. The first edition used an heirloom red winter wheat. Spelt introduces nuttier, more biscuit-like grain character.

At $550, this is firmly in the collector tier. Availability will be lottery-driven in most markets.

Knob Creek Blender's Edition 01

Knob Creek launched a new series on March 31: Blender's Edition 01, a blended expression at 106 proof and $44.9910. This is an unusual move for Knob Creek, which typically emphasizes single-barrel selections. The blending approach aims for a softer, sweeter profile while keeping the brand's characteristic heft.

Blood Oath Pact 12

Lux Row Distillers released Blood Oath Pact 12 on April 2 at 98.6 proof and $129.99. The annual series added an Italian wine-cask double finish this year11.

Proof & Wood Tumblin' Dice 11 Year Bottled in Bond

Proof & Wood quietly released their first Bottled in Bond expression: an 11-year, 100-proof bourbon distilled at MGP in 2014 with a 99% corn mashbill12. About 400 cases produced. If you can find it, this is the under-the-radar pick of the week.

Tariffs Are Still Hurting

DISCUS reported on March 31 that U.S. spirits exports fell 3.8% to $2.37 billion in 2025. American whiskey took the worst hit: exports dropped 19%, driven by retaliatory tariffs from the EU and Canada3.

This isn't new pain, but the 19% figure is stark. American whiskey had been on a decade-long export growth trajectory before trade disputes reversed the trend. With no resolution on the horizon, distilleries that built capacity for global demand are sitting on more inventory than they planned for. That excess supply eventually works its way into domestic allocations and pricing, which could mean more bottles on shelves at lower prices in the near term. A silver lining for domestic buyers, if an uncomfortable one for distilleries.

Awards: Shortbarrel Takes Top Honors

Shortbarrel Double Oak Bourbon, an Atlanta-based brand, won Best Overall Bourbon and Best Overall Whiskey at the 2026 WSWA Wine & Spirits Tasting Competition on March 29, scoring 96 points6. The brand is relatively young and sources its bourbon before finishing it in a proprietary double-oak process. A top award at WSWA gives it national credibility that's hard to earn any other way.

The Hot Dog Bourbon

A Rare Character bourbon labeled "I Got That Dog in Me" hit Costco shelves in the D.C. area on March 30 with the chain's iconic $1.50 hot dog combo on the label. It sold out immediately. Secondary market prices reportedly reached $1,0005.

This is bourbon as meme currency. The whiskey itself is beside the point. What matters is the signal: novelty labeling and retail exclusivity drive more consumer urgency than age statements or mashbill innovation. Whether that's good or bad for the category depends on your perspective. The secondary market doesn't care.

What to Watch

Bottle to Watch: Angel's Envy 10-Year Cask Strength Rye ($269.99, April 17). The brand's first age-stated rye at barrel proof. Limited to 10,800 bottles.

Under the Radar: Proof & Wood Tumblin' Dice 11 Year Bottled in Bond. Only 400 cases. 99% corn mashbill aged 11 years at MGP. If your local shop stocks Proof & Wood, call now.

Business Watch: The Brown-Forman/Pernod Ricard talks. If this deal closes, it will reshape distribution, pricing, and shelf space for every bourbon brand not named Jack Daniel's. Follow the Bloomberg and Shanken News Daily coverage.

Tariff Watch: The 19% export decline in American whiskey is not slowing down. If EU tariffs remain in place through 2026, expect more domestic-market-only releases and potentially softer pricing on mid-shelf bottles as distilleries redirect inventory.
